Toyota Sienna 2021–2026 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or Toyota's lookup. Open items to close before purchase: third-row seatback bolts (25V-086, 2021–2025), occupant classification sensor / passenger airbag (23V-865), VSC software (22V-239), and on 2022 eight-seaters the second-row belt webbing guide (21V-889).

2. Check 02

   On any 2021–2024, ask a Toyota dealer to check Customer Support Program 22TE09 (high-voltage floor harness / rear motor cable corrosion) status by VIN. On AWD vans from salt states, treat this as the single most important check — AM radio static or a hybrid-system warning are the classic tells.

3. Check 03

   Test drive below 30 mph and brake gently to a stop several times. A brief 'release' or surge feel as the van switches from regenerative to friction braking is this generation's top complaint — decide whether you can live with it, and ask whether any brake software updates were performed.

4. Check 04

   Ask when the 12V battery was last replaced and whether the battery-drain software updates (T-SB-0071-22 era) were done. A van that sat on a dealer lot with a weak 12V will throw gremlins — dead doors, no-start, warning lights.

5. Check 05

   Cycle both power sliding doors from the fob, dash buttons, and door handles several times. Gen-4 doors fail electrically (dead switches, doors that beep but don't move) rather than snapping cables like the last generation — still money if it's broken.

6. Check 06

   Pull the dipstick and oil cap and look for milky residue — Toyota issued T-SB-0104-21 for milky/discolored oil on A25A engines, typically short-trip vans.

7. Check 07

   If you can, top off the fuel tank on the test drive. Scattered owner reports describe early nozzle click-off and less range than the 18-gallon tank implies — the same underfill condition Toyota's other hybrids got fuel-tank TSBs for.

8. Check 08

   On AWD: check what's under the floor — many of these vans have no spare tire. Owners report paying roughly $200 to add one; budget it into your offer if it's missing.
