Should I buy a 2019–present Ram 1500?

Buy the right one, not just any one. The DT Ram is the nicest-driving half-ton of its generation, and most of its problems are known quantities you can screen for. Skip 2019 unless it's cheap and every recall is closed — first-year trucks drew far more electrical, steering, and quality complaints. On any 5.7L, listen hard for a tick that doesn't fade and budget mentally for lifters. On an EcoDiesel, confirm the CP4 fuel-pump recall (22V-406) was performed by VIN before money changes hands. Treat eTorque and air suspension as features that add both comfort and future repair bills. The new fork in the road is 2025: the Hurricane twin-turbo six is quicker and more efficient than the HEMI, but the redesigned 2025 racked up six recalls and a pile of electrical complaints in its first year and a half — treat a used 2025 like a 2019 and buy only with every recall verified closed. The returning 2026 HEMI is the same proven Gen-3 V8 as before, which also means the same lifter risk this file documents. A 2022–2024 HEMI truck with records is still the value sweet spot.

  • Cold-start any 5.7L HEMI and listen. A tick that fades as it warms is often exhaust-manifold bolts (annoying, fixable). A tick that stays or gets louder, especially with a misfire code or shudder, points to lifters/cam — walk away or price it in.
  • Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. The 2019 alone had 29 recalls; on 2020–2022 EcoDiesels, specifically confirm recall 22V-406 (high-pressure fuel pump); on 2025–2026 trucks, confirm the trailer-tow module (26V-059) and instrument-cluster (25V-826 / 26V-225) recalls show completed.
  • On eTorque trucks (all V6, many V8), watch for 'Stop/Start Unavailable' or 'Service eTorque' messages and confirm the truck restarts smoothly from auto stop-start. A failing 48V battery or belt starter-generator announces itself here.
  • On air-suspension trucks, cycle through all ride heights and listen for a compressor that runs long or a corner that sags. Come back after the truck sits overnight if you can — leaks show as a lean.
  • Inspect the 12-inch Uconnect screen edges for bubbling/delamination and watch for ghost touches or spontaneous reboots during the test drive.
  • Highway-drive at 60–75 mph and listen for rear axle whine or hum that changes on and off throttle — differential bearing and ring-gear complaints are documented on early trucks.
  • Note steering feel: wander or vagueness on-center was a common early complaint; some cases were alignment/track-bar, some needed a steering rack.
  • Pull oil-change records. The HEMI lifter issue is worsened by long idle time and stretched intervals — a fleet truck that idled its life is higher risk.
  • On a 2025+ Hurricane truck, watch for hesitation or misfire behavior on the test drive and ask for proof the ISCM/PCM software updates (TSBs 08-031-25 / 08-055-25) were applied to an early-build truck. Make sure the digital instrument cluster never blanks or reboots during the drive.

5.7L HEMI lifter and camshaft failure ('HEMI tick')

Symptoms: Ticking on cold start or after long idling that persists or gets louder as the engine warms; progresses to cylinder misfire codes, hesitation, and reduced power. When a lifter roller stops spinning it wipes the cam lobe, sending metal through the engine.

Fix: Camshaft and full lifter set replacement at an independent shop typically runs $3,000–$5,500. If debris circulated or the failure was caught late, a replacement engine is the honest fix and pushes the bill toward $7,000–$8,500+. Long idle time and stretched oil intervals raise the risk; frequent oil changes with the correct oil are cheap insurance, not a cure.

eTorque 48V battery and belt starter-generator (BSG) failure

Fix: Diagnosis first — faults can be the 48V lithium battery pack, the belt starter-generator, or wiring/grounds. EcoDiesel CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump failure (recall 22V-406)

Symptoms: Sudden loss of power or stall while driving; hard starts; fuel-pressure codes. When the Bosch CP4.2 pump fails it can shed metal through the entire high-pressure fuel system.

12-inch Uconnect screen delamination, ghost touches, and reboots

Symptoms: Bubbling or peeling at the screen surface (delamination), phantom 'ghost' touches that change settings on their own, vertical lines, flickering, and spontaneous reboots. Software TSBs (08-009-19, 08-095-22) address the glitches; the physical delamination is not software-fixable.

Fix: Dealers replace the display assembly — often $1,200–$2,000 out of warranty. Air suspension compressor and air-spring failures (equipped trucks)

5.7L HEMI exhaust manifold bolts break (exhaust-leak tick)

Symptoms: Sharp ticking/tapping strongest on cold start that fades as the manifold heats up and expands — the tell that separates it from lifter noise. Exhaust smell near the engine bay, soot at the manifold flange.

Fix: Replace the broken bolts/studs (upgraded hardware is the smart move) and the gasket. Cheap if the bolts come out clean; the bill climbs when broken studs must be extracted or a warped/cracked manifold needs replacement. Not urgent, but leaks slowly erode the flange, so fix it before it grows.

Early Hurricane I6 teething problems (2025 builds)

Symptoms: Check-engine light with multiple-misfire codes (P0300–P0306) and hesitation on light throttle; High Output trucks also logged ignition-coil circuit codes (P2C30/P2C31) and catalyst-efficiency codes (P0420/P0430). Beyond the software faults, owners reported thermostat failures, low-mileage overheating, and disconnected purge lines. NHTSA's engine-complaint file on the 2025 filled fast — dozens of reports at an average of only a few hundred miles, with electrical complaints (dead batteries, won't-start, module faults) the biggest single category.

Fix: Stellantis addressed the misfire/hesitation complaints with free ISCM/PCM software reflashes — TSB 08-031-25 (Standard Output, trucks built on or before 1/15/2025) and TSB 08-055-25 (High Output, built on or before 1/7/2025). The hardware complaints (thermostats, cooling parts) have been warranty jobs at this age. So far this reads like first-year teething rather than a design flaw — a 2025 rental that racked up nearly 50,000 hard miles in one year held up without engine failure, and no widespread internal-failure pattern has emerged. But the Hurricane has no high-mileage track record yet; nobody honestly knows what it looks like at 150k.

Blank instrument cluster and trailer-tow module failure (2025–2026 recalls)

Symptoms: Instrument cluster goes blank or dead at startup or while driving — no speedometer, gear indicator, or warning lights (recalls 25V-826 and 26V-225, the latter covering 65,348 Stellantis trucks). Separately, a failed trailer-tow module can stop the trailer's brake lamps and turn signals from lighting and the trailer's electric brakes from applying at all (recall 26V-059 — roughly 312,000 2025–26 Ram 1500s out of a 456k-vehicle Stellantis recall).

Fix: All of it is free recall work: software reprogramming (or cluster replacement) for the display recalls, and outright module replacement for the trailer-tow recall. The 2025's sheet also includes headlight-module software (24V-942), TPMS software (25V-231), and wheel-hub encoder rings that can disable stability control (24V-794). Six recalls inside eighteen months is the 2019 story replaying on the refreshed truck — run the VIN before buying and walk from any 2025–26 with open recalls.

Routine costs are normal full-size-truck money — tires, brakes, and fluids are all bigger and pricier than a sedan's, and the 5.7L likes premium-ish drinking habits around town. What separates a cheap DT from an expensive one is option content and luck: eTorque, air suspension, and the 12-inch screen are all comfort features with four-figure failure modes, and the HEMI lifter issue is the one genuine budget-wrecker. An EcoDiesel with the recall done is efficient but costs more per service. Set aside a real reserve on any loaded Limited/Longhorn — the fanciest trucks carry the most failure-prone hardware.     Engine + cabin air filter change

    1. Unclip the airbox lid in the engine bay, lift it, and swap in the new panel filter with the seal seated flat.
    2. Re-clip the lid and make sure the intake tube didn't pop loose.
    3. Open the glovebox, release the side stops and damper arm, and let it swing down.
    4. Slide out the cabin filter cover, swap the filter with the airflow arrow matching the old one, and reassemble.

    The short version

    The 5th-gen (DT) Ram 1500 out-rides and out-cabins every other half-ton of its era, and the ZF 8-speed is a genuinely good transmission. The catch is that its signature features are also its failure points. The 5.7L HEMI can eat lifters and wipe the camshaft — the infamous tick that turns into a misfire and a $3,000–$8,500 bill. The eTorque mild-hybrid system’s 48-volt battery and belt starter-generator fail often enough that Ram is walking the whole system back. The 12-inch touchscreen everyone buys the truck for delaminates and ghost-touches. And the optional air suspension rides beautifully right up until a compressor or air spring quits in the cold.

    None of that makes the DT a bad truck. It makes it a truck you screen carefully instead of buying on looks.

    And this generation is still on sale — refreshed for 2025 with an engine soap opera attached. Ram dropped the HEMI for the twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six, buyers revolted, and the V8 came back for 2026 wearing a badge Ram literally calls the “Symbol of Protest.” That saga split the used market into three distinct eras, covered below.

    What that means when you’re shopping

    Start with the year. 2019 was the rough first year — the most complaints of the generation by a wide margin, 29 recalls (including one where a loose battery ground could kill the power steering), and the most electrical gremlins. 2022–2024 trucks have the cleanest record.

    Then the engine. On any 5.7L, cold-start it yourself and listen: a tick that fades warm is likely manifold bolts (cheap-ish); one that persists is a lifter conversation. On a 2020–2023 EcoDiesel, the deal-or-no-deal question is whether fuel-pump recall 22V-406 shows completed on the VIN — an unrecalled CP4 failure can contaminate the whole fuel system. The gen-2 EGR-cooler fire recall you may have read about belongs to the 2014–2019 engine, not this truck.

    Finally, the options. eTorque, four-corner air suspension, and the big screen are all wonderful and all carry four-figure repair modes. A plainer Big Horn on coil springs is the low-risk buy; a loaded Limited needs a bigger reserve fund.

    The 2025 Hurricane switch — and the HEMI’s comeback

    For 2025, Ram restyled the truck and dropped the 5.7L HEMI entirely, replacing it with the 3.0L twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six: 420 hp standard, 540 hp High Output in the Tungsten flagship and the new RHO, which replaced the discontinued TRX. On paper the six beats the V8 it replaced by 25 hp and 59 lb-ft while towing more.

    The launch didn’t go smoothly. The redesigned 2025 collected six recalls in about eighteen months — blank instrument clusters (25V-826, then 26V-225), a trailer-tow module that can silently kill trailer brakes and lights (26V-059, roughly 312,000 Ram 1500s), headlight software (24V-942), TPMS software (25V-231), and wheel-hub encoder rings that can disable stability control (24V-794). Early Hurricane builds needed misfire/hesitation reflashes (TSBs 08-031-25 and 08-055-25), and NHTSA’s complaint file filled fastest in the electrical column. Sales told the same story, and on June 5, 2025 Ram announced the HEMI’s return for 2026 — same 395-hp Gen-3 V8, now eTorque-only, about $1,200 on most trims. Ram’s own CEO called dropping it a mistake: “we own it and we fixed it.” A 777-hp supercharged SRT TRX has since been announced for 2027.

    What that means for a buyer: a 2025 is the new 2019 — potentially a deal, but only with every recall verified closed and the software updates documented. The Hurricane itself shows no internal-failure pattern so far (one rental survived nearly 50,000 miles of abuse in a year), but it has no high-mileage record yet.
