Should I buy a 2019–present Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
Buy it by engine and build date, not by trim. The 3.0L Duramax (especially the 2023+ LZ0) and a later-build 5.3L are the sane picks — though a 2020–early 2021 Duramax carries its own build-date risk, a pre-redesign timing chain good for a documented $8,000–$10,000 repair if it stretches and jumps timing, so confirm the chain redesign or a clean, rattle-free cold start before buying one — and a 2025–2026 truck is the cleanest bet of the whole run — its 6.2L was built after GM's June 2024 crankshaft and rod manufacturing fixes and so far sits outside every recall and investigation. A 2021–2024 6.2L is only worth considering with proof the 25V-274 recall inspection was performed — and even then, NHTSA opened an investigation (RQ26001) into engines that failed after the fix and a second one (EA25007) into 2019–2021 and late-2024 trucks the recall never covered, so a pre-purchase oil analysis is cheap insurance. On any V8, ask directly whether lifters were ever replaced; trucks built September 2020–March 2021 caught the worst of the defective-lifter batch. The 8-speed's shudder is real but fixable with a fluid exchange, so don't let it kill a deal on an otherwise clean truck. Common Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems & repair costs
Valve lifter (DFM/AFM) failure — 5.3L and 6.2L V8s
$2,500–$6,500Symptoms: Sudden loud ticking or knocking, a persistent misfire on one cylinder, check-engine light with misfire codes, reduced power. A collapsed lifter can bend a pushrod and wipe the camshaft lobe if driven on.
Fix: Replace the lifters (at minimum on the affected bank, ideally all 16) and any bent pushrods; if the cam lobe is damaged, the camshaft too. GM replaced many under powertrain warranty, but out-of-warranty this is a $3,000–$6,000+ job at an independent shop. 6.2L L87 crankshaft / rod-bearing failure (recall 25V-274 + NHTSA investigations)
$8,000–$13,000Symptoms: Knocking from the bottom end, sudden loss of propulsion, engine seizure — sometimes with no warning. GM logged over 14,000 field complaints alleging loss of propulsion from crankshaft, rod, or bearing failure.
Fix: GM recalled roughly 597,000 US trucks and SUVs in April 2025 (NHTSA 25V-274, GM N252494001–003): dealers inspect the engine and repair or replace it free if it fails inspection; passing engines get 0W-40 oil and a new fill cap. It didn't end there. In October 2025 NHTSA opened engineering analysis EA25007 — covering about 286,000 vehicles the recall never touched (2019–2021 and out-of-window 2024 builds) after 173 out-of-scope failure reports — and in January 2026 it opened recall query RQ26001 after 36 owners reported engines failing AFTER the recall remedy, on both the oil-change and full-replacement paths. 2025–2026 trucks sit outside all of this because GM says crankshaft and rod manufacturing fixes were in place by June 1, 2024. On an affected VIN, the recall work is the floor, not a guarantee — the cost range above is what an out-of-pocket engine replacement runs if you're outside the recall's coverage.

8-speed torque converter clutch shudder (8L90/8L45)
$300–$3,500Symptoms: Rumble-strip vibration under light acceleration around 25–45 mph, harsh or clunky 1–2 shifts, occasional slam into gear. Often mistaken for driving over rough pavement.
Fix: GM's TSB 18-NA-355 calls for a complete fluid exchange to Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP — the original fluid absorbed moisture and ruined torque-converter-clutch friction. Factory fill switched to the new fluid in July 2019, so early 2019 trucks are the most exposed. If shudder returns after the flush, the torque converter itself needs replacement ($2,000–$3,500). 10-speed (10L80) harsh shifts and shudder
Symptoms: Sharp or clunky shifts (worst 1–2 when cold), rumble-strip shudder at steady throttle, delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse that ends with a jolt, occasional surge or neutral-flare, and transmission-overheat warnings.
Fix: GM's bulletin 22-NA-182 (revised September 2024, coverage through 2025 models) walks dealers through diagnosis for harsh shift, shudder, surge, stall, neutral/flare, and overheating on the 10L80 and its siblings. Fixes ladder up from software updates and adaptive relearns to a fluid exchange, then valve-body or torque-converter work on stubborn trucks; some 2020–2022 diesel 10-speeds also needed software or valve-body fixes for rear-wheel-lockup reports. Keep perspective: this unit still runs well below the 8-speed's early-year complaint record, and most complaints are drivability annoyances, not failures.

3.0L Duramax (LM2) long crank / no-start
$500–$4,500Symptoms: Engine cranks noticeably longer than normal before firing, especially cold; in worse cases an intermittent no-start. Comes and goes, which makes it maddening to diagnose.
Fix: The most common root cause is a camshaft position reluctor (exciter) wheel that was bent or out of spec from the supplier, confusing the ECM about engine position; wiring and fuel-delivery faults produce the same symptom. Fixes range from a reflash or sensor work to major teardown for the reluctor wheel itself. GM redesigned the engine (2023 LZ0) specifically addressing this. 3.0L Duramax (LM2) timing chain failure — early builds
$8,000–$10,000Symptoms: Timing-chain rattle or slack-related codes, rough idle or a misfire as timing drifts, and in worst cases the chain jumps the cam gear and breaks rocker arms, damaging pistons, valves, and the crankshaft. Often shows up after years of otherwise normal, on-schedule oil changes — this is a separate failure mode from the long-crank/no-start issue above, and the two can occur on the same early truck.
Fix: Early LM2 timing chains lacked oil-flow holes between links, and a flawed camshaft cover design let oil bypass the PCV system — both starved the chain of lubrication at the rear of the engine, where it stretches and develops slack the tensioner can't take up. 3.0L Duramax oil-pump belt service (buried behind the transmission)
$1,500–$3,500Symptoms: Not a failure at first — it's a maintenance item. The oil pump is belt-driven at the back of the engine. A neglected belt that fails means instant oil-pressure loss and a destroyed engine.
Fix: Replace the oil-pump belt per the schedule. The catch is access: GM's procedure involves pulling the transmission, which is why a belt costs four figures to install. GM's original interval was 150,000 miles; after studying returned belts and finding no degradation, GM extended it to 200,000 miles starting with the 2023 LZ0 — the belt part itself is unchanged, only the schedule moved. 2.7L turbo (L3B) head gasket and oil consumption
$2,000–$4,000Symptoms: Coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, or overheating (head gasket); oil level dropping between changes; rough or chugging idle and hesitation under load. A tiny number of 2023 blocks (about a dozen trucks) had a casting crack in the main oil gallery — GM replaced those engines under Customer Satisfaction Program N232415060.
Fix: Head-gasket replacement on failed units; many were caught under the 5-year/60k powertrain warranty. Keep up on oil changes and check the level monthly — direct-injection turbo engines consume some oil, but a quart every 1,000–2,000 miles isn't normal. Routine costs are ordinary full-size-truck money — tires, brakes, and fluids are all mainstream and competitively priced. The budget risk is concentrated in the engine bay: a V8 truck that's past warranty carries real exposure to a $3,000–$6,000 lifter job, and an unremedied 6.2L carries engine-replacement risk. The diesel flips the math — cheap to run and frugal at the pump, but a 2020–early 2021 LM2 carries its own $8,000–$10,000 exposure if the pre-redesign timing chain stretches, and every LM2/LZ0 owner should set aside for the oil-pump belt (150k on 2020–2022 trucks, 200k on 2023+ LZ0) and use quality fuel. How to fix common Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems (DIY)
8-speed transmission fluid exchange (Mobil 1 LV ATF HP)
Tools: Floor jack + jack stands or ramps, Fluid transfer pump, Torx/hex sockets for drain and fill plugs, Drain pan and gloves, Scan tool or thermometer method to set fluid level at correct temp
- Warm the truck up, then drain the transmission fluid and measure what came out.
- Refill through the fill port with Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP (the blue-label fluid, GM 19417577) matching the drained amount.
- Drive 10–15 minutes to circulate, then repeat the drain-and-fill. Two to three cycles replaces most of the old fluid — this is the DIY version of the dealer's triple flush.
- Set the final level with the transmission at the specified check temperature, engine running.
- If shudder persists after the fluid change, the torque converter is damaged — that part is a shop job.

Engine + cabin air filter change
Tools: None (glovebox clips by hand); flathead screwdriver helps on airbox clips
- Unclip the airbox lid in the engine bay, lift out the old engine filter, and drop in the new one with the seal seated flat.
- Open the glovebox, squeeze the sides to release the stops, and let it swing down.
- Slide the cabin filter cover off, swap the filter with the airflow arrow pointing the correct direction, and reassemble.

Front brake pads and rotors
Tools: Floor jack + jack stands, Socket set + breaker bar, C-clamp or caliper piston tool, Torque wrench, Brake cleaner and anti-seize/brake grease
- Loosen the lug nuts, lift and support the front end, and remove the wheels.
- Remove the caliper bolts, hang the caliper with a hook (never by the hose), and slide off the old pads.
- Remove the caliper bracket and old rotor; clean the hub face and hang the new rotor.
- Compress the caliper piston, install new pads with lubricated slide pins, and reinstall the bracket and caliper to torque spec.
- Repeat on the other side, refit the wheels, and pump the brake pedal firm before moving the truck.
- Bed the pads with a series of moderate stops from 40 mph.

The short version
The 2019–present Silverado is really four different trucks depending on the engine under the hood. The 5.3L and 6.2L V8s carry GM’s cylinder-deactivation lifter problem — a collapsed lifter means a ticking, misfiring engine and a $3,000–$6,000 repair, with trucks built September 2020 to March 2021 catching the worst batch. The 6.2L (L87) added a bigger headline: a 2025 recall covering roughly 597,000 US trucks (2021–2024 builds) for crankshaft and rod-bearing failures that can kill the engine without warning. Since then the story has widened — NHTSA opened an engineering analysis (EA25007, October 2025) into about 286,000 never-recalled trucks after 173 out-of-scope failure reports, and a recall query (RQ26001, January 2026) after 36 engines failed even with the recall fix done.
Meanwhile the 3.0L Duramax diesel quietly became the enthusiast pick once its early long-crank issue was engineered out in the 2023 LZ0 — though the earliest LM2 builds (2020–early 2021) carry their own risk, an under-lubricated timing chain GM redesigned by early 2021 — and the 2.7L turbo four — the engine everyone doubted — dodges the lifter mess entirely.
What changed for 2025–2026
Not much mechanically — and that’s the point. The 2025 and 2026 trucks are carryovers (2026 got new headlamps, two colors, and wider Super Cruise availability), but their V8s were built after GM’s June 1, 2024 crankshaft and rod manufacturing fixes, which is why they sit outside the recall and both investigations. The 2025 Silverado 1500 has no NHTSA recalls at all as of mid-2026; 2026’s two are trivial — a do-not-drive transfer-case recall covering just 16 trucks (26V-289) and a missing owner’s-manual recall (26V-114). The 10-speed’s harsh-shift/shudder bulletin (TSB 22-NA-182) runs through 2025 models, so test-drive for it either way.
The subtext worth knowing: the redesigned 2027 Silverado replaces the 5.3L and 6.2L with all-new 5.7L and 6.6L V8s. GM is retiring this generation’s problem engines, not fixing them again.
What that means when you’re shopping
Shop by engine first, trim second. A 2023–2026 truck with the 5.3L or the LZ0 diesel is the low-drama pick, and 2025–2026 is the cleanest slice of the run. On any 2021–2024 6.2L, pull the VIN and confirm the 25V-274 recall inspection is done — and even then, buy on documented oil-change history; a 2019–2021 6.2L was never recalled but is under the same federal microscope. On any V8, a cold start tells you a lot: listen for ticking and misfires in the first 30 seconds.
The 8-speed’s highway shudder feels alarming but is the cheapest fix on this list — a fluid exchange per TSB 18-NA-355 cures most trucks. Don’t walk away from an otherwise clean truck over it; negotiate the flush instead.
One trap: some 2019 trucks are badged “Silverado 1500 LD” and are actually the previous generation. Check the body before assuming which file applies.

A 2023+ LZ0 Duramax crew cab is the sweet spot of this generation: the long-crank fix, a 200k-mile oil-pump-belt interval (up from 150k on the earlier LM2), 10-speed transmission, and real-world fuel economy no V8 half-ton touches. It also dodges the early LM2’s timing chain issue entirely. Just budget for the belt service down the road and buy fuel from busy stations. If it has to be the big V8, a 2025–2026 6.2L is the first build of this generation we’d call defensible — post-fix manufacturing, warranty-backed, and outside every federal action so far.

Which Silverado 1500 engine is the most reliable?
The 3.0L Duramax diesel — especially the revised LZ0 from 2023 on, which fixed the LM2's long-crank issue and extended the oil-pump-belt interval from 150,000 to 200,000 miles. The one asterisk: 2020–early 2021 LM2 diesels shipped with an under-lubricated timing chain GM redesigned by early 2021, so confirm the fix or a clean cold start on an early truck. Do all 5.3L Silverados have lifter failure?
No. Most trucks never have a lifter fail — but the failure rate is high enough, and the bill big enough, that it's the defining risk of this generation's V8s. Trucks built September 2020 through March 2021 caught a known bad batch of lifters and are the most likely to fail, usually early. A truck that already had lifters replaced with updated parts is a reasonable buy.
How do I fix the Silverado 8-speed transmission shudder?
A full fluid exchange to Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP per GM TSB 18-NA-355 — roughly $300–$500 at an independent shop — cures most trucks. The original fluid absorbed moisture and disrupted torque-converter lockup. If the shudder comes back after the flush, the torque converter itself is damaged and replacement runs $2,000–$3,500.
Are 2019 Silverados worse than later years?
As a rule, yes. 2019 was the first year of the new platform and leads the generation in transmission complaints; its 8-speeds also got the older, problem-prone fluid from the factory. Note that some trucks sold as '2019 Silverado 1500 LD' are actually the previous (2014–2018) generation carried over — check the body style before applying this file.
Are the 2025 and 2026 Silverado 6.2L engines included in the recall?
No. Recall 25V-274 stops at engines built May 31, 2024 — GM says the crankshaft and connecting-rod manufacturing fixes were in place by June 1, 2024, so 2025–2026 trucks were excluded, and NHTSA's follow-up investigations don't list them either. The 2025 Silverado 1500 has no NHTSA recalls at all so far, and 2026's are trivial (a 16-truck transfer-case recall, 26V-289, and a missing owner's-manual recall, 26V-114).
