Buy it. A maintained 2002–2006 CR-V is about as safe as a 20-year-old vehicle purchase gets — the K24 engine is a workhorse, rust aside the body holds up, and parts are cheap and everywhere. Your money questions are all up front: does the A/C blow ice cold (a dead or weak system means the $1,500–$2,500 'black death' bill, not a $150 recharge), have the two big safety recalls (Takata airbag inflators, driver's window switch) been completed by VIN, and on AWD cars, does it groan in tight turns (cheap fluid fix, but a sign of neglect). A 2005–2006 with cold A/C, recall paperwork, and service records is the pick.

Buy it — with your eyes open. The 3rd-gen CR-V is a genuinely good used SUV: one proven drivetrain, cavernous interior, cheap parts, and the easy path to 200,000+ miles. What separates a great buy from a headache is checking three specific things before you hand over money — the A/C compressor (a catastrophic internal failure trashes the whole system), oil consumption on 2008–2011 K24 engines (Honda extended the warranty for sticking piston rings), and the door lock actuators (a near-universal failure on this generation). 2010–2011 cars with documented oil-consumption repair already done are the sweet spot.

Buy it — but pick your powertrain deliberately. A 2012–2014 car with the 5-speed automatic is about as low-drama as used crossovers get: the K24 has no systemic engine failure, and the known issues (VTC rattle, battery drain, rear-diff shudder) are hundreds of dollars, not thousands. The 2015–2016 CVT cars are where you slow down: many are fine, but enough vibrate badly enough that Honda issued TSB 15-046 and NHTSA opened an investigation. Test-drive a 2015–2016 at idle in gear and under light throttle at 1,000–2,200 rpm before you hand over money; a smooth one is a good car.

Buy it — but verify the engine, not just the body. A 5th-gen CR-V is spacious, fuel-efficient, and easy to live with, and most go the distance. The catch is the 1.5L turbo's oil-dilution issue: gasoline works its way into the oil, raising the oil level and, over many short cold trips, accelerating wear. It's worst on 2017–2018 cars, especially in cold climates; Honda issued software updates and extended the powertrain warranty to 6 years to cover it. On the used market, 2020–2022 cars are the calmer pick. If you want to sidestep the turbo entirely, hunt down a 2017–2019 LX with the 2.4L naturally aspirated engine. Whatever you buy, confirm the open recalls (fuel pump, A/C) are done and check the dipstick for a gas smell.

Buy it — with a VIN check, not a leap of faith. The bones are good: proven 1.5T, an excellent hybrid system, and no fundamental engine or transmission design flaw identified so far. But 2023–2025 cars sit inside the 1.7-million-vehicle sticky-steering recall (24V-744), and the 2023 Hybrid specifically stacked up three more recalls — e-CVT (23V-588), high-voltage battery module (24V-745), and high-pressure fuel pump (24V-763). All are free dealer fixes; your job is running the VIN and confirming they're closed. Cars built after August 30, 2024 got the improved steering gearbox from the factory, which makes late-2024 and newer the cleanest pick. Be honest with yourself about one more thing: nobody — including us — knows how this generation holds up at 150,000 miles yet.
