Buy on documentation, not on vibes. A 2005–2009 Outback with receipts showing the head gaskets were already done (with the updated multi-layer gaskets), the timing belt serviced, and no torque bind on a tight-circle test drive is a legitimately great AWD wagon. An undocumented 2.5i is a coin flip on a $2,000–$3,500 head-gasket job; an undocumented 2005–2006 2.5XT adds turbo-failure risk on top. The 3.0R H6 sidesteps both the head-gasket epidemic and the turbo issue and is the sleeper pick if you can find one maintained. 2008–2009 cars are the safest of the run.

Buy it for the all-weather capability, but choose the engine deliberately. The 3.6R six-cylinder is the no-drama pick: timing chain, conventional automatic, and none of the 2.5L's headline issues. Among the 2.5L cars, 2013–2014 FB25 models can burn oil (a class action got owners an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty extension), while 2010–2012 EJ253 cars can seep head gaskets with age. On any 2.5L CVT car, confirm the transmission shifts cleanly with no low-speed shudder. A well-documented example of either engine is a genuinely useful vehicle; an unchecked one can hand you a four- or five-figure repair.

Buy the engine and the body; scrutinize the transmission and the electronics. A 2015–2019 Outback with a healthy CVT is a 200,000-mile car, and both the FB25 and the 3.6R flat-6 are proven. The real money risk is the Lineartronic CVT: Subaru extended CVT coverage to 10 years/100,000 miles on 2015 cars (a window that has now closed) and separately on 2019s (still open on many), but 2016–2018 cars got no extension — so on those years a CVT failure is entirely your bill. Test-drive cold, feel for shudder on light throttle around 20–40 mph, and price the car assuming no transmission safety net. Skip the 2015 unless it's cheap: it carries the worst infotainment complaints, the windshield-cracking settlement years, and a CVT extension that has already expired.

Buy the drivetrain; document the electronics and the glass. Both engines are chain-driven, direct-injected, and holding up well, and even the CVT story is better than the last generation's — Subaru caught the turbo cars' chain-slip issue with recalls and extended the 2020 turbo's CVT warranty to 10 years/100,000 miles. What you're really shopping around is the annoyance layer: a windshield that cracks easily (2020–2022 cars got a class-action extended warranty with ONE free replacement — find out if it's been used), a 12-volt battery that drains when the car sits (settled for 2020, in fresh litigation for 2021–2022), and the 11.6-inch touchscreen that freezes or goes black (Subaru extended head-unit coverage to 8 years/150,000 miles on 2020–2022 cars in January 2025). A 2023–2025 car sidesteps most of this: post-refresh, wireless CarPlay, and far lower complaint volume — but also none of the extended-coverage safety nets.

There is no reliability verdict yet, and anyone giving you one is guessing. What you can reason about is risk structure: the drivetrains (both engines, the CVT, the AWD system) are carryover from a 2020–2025 generation whose mechanicals were its strong suit — that's the low-risk half. The all-new half is everything else: new body, new electrical architecture, new 12.1-inch infotainment, new EyeSight with radar, and a new assembly plant (Yajima, Japan, after two decades of Indiana-built Outbacks). First-year electronics on an all-new Subaru platform have a documented history one generation back, and the earliest 2026 reports — a handful of NHTSA complaints and owner-forum threads — lean electronic, though nothing rises to a pattern yet. If you need the car now, buy it with the full warranty ahead of you and document any glitch. If you can wait, the second or third model year of this generation will have the same drivetrain and a year or two of debugging you didn't pay for — and possibly less tariff distortion in the price.
