Should I buy a 2006–2010 Ford Explorer?

Buy the right one, skip the rest. The safest 4th-gen Explorer is a 2009–2010 — complaint volume falls off a cliff after 2008 — and the 4.6L V8 is the smarter engine because it dodges both the 5R55S transmission and the V6 timing chain cassettes. A 2006 4.0L V6 is the riskiest combination in the lineup: the worst-year transmission complaints, radiator leaks, and chain cassettes all converge on it. If you're set on a V6 car, budget for the transmission like it's already failing and walk away from anything that rattles on cold start. As cheap 4x4 family haulers and tow rigs go, a clean late V8 car is a legitimately good buy.

4.0L SOHC timing chain cassette / tensioner failure
