Should I buy a 2007–2012 Nissan Altima?
Only buy one with proof about the transmission. The engines — both the 2.5 and the excellent 3.5 V6 — will outlast the car, but the Xtronic CVT fails often enough that Nissan doubled its warranty on 2007–2010 cars, and every one of those warranties has now expired. That means a used 4th-gen Altima is either a bargain (CVT already replaced with paperwork, or a 6-speed manual car) or a $4,000–$5,500 transmission bill wearing a low price tag. On 2009–2010 push-button-start cars, also confirm the electronic steering column lock was replaced under Nissan's service campaign, or you may one day own a car that simply won't start.
