Toyota Camry 2018–2024Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The XV70 Camry is one of the safest used-car bets of its era — a genuinely durable sedan with two big early-year caveats. 2018–2020 cars were hit by the massive Denso fuel-pump recall (sudden stalling), and 2018–2019 cars got a second safety recall for a brake vacuum pump that can kill power brake assist. Early 8-speeds also shift rough until updated. A 2021–2024 car, or an early one with recall work documented, is about as low-risk as used cars get.

Motor oil — 3.5L V6

3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 only — SAE 0W-20 full synthetic, 5.7 qt with a filter change (5.6 qt without). A 5-quart jug is NOT enough: buy 6 quarts, pour in 5.7, keep the rest. Do not put 0W-16 in this engine, and don't let anyone round 5.7 up to a flat 6 — that overfills it

Verdict

Should I buy a 2018–2024 Toyota Camry?

Buy it. The XV70 is the Camry doing what Camrys do — routinely clearing 200,000 miles with basic maintenance — and the hybrid is arguably the best used midsize sedan on the market, period. The homework is concentrated in the early years: 2018–2020 cars need the Denso fuel-pump recall verified done, 2018–2019 cars need the brake vacuum pump recall verified done, and early 8-speed cars should have the transmission software updates applied. A 2021–2024 car sidesteps nearly all of it. The V6 is a gem if you find one; the hybrid is the smart-money pick.

Best years

2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

Years to avoid

2018 (first-year: roughest 8-speed behavior plus both safety recalls), 2018–2020 only if fuel-pump recall work is undocumented

Pre-purchase inspection checklist

Printable field version →
  • Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (or a Toyota dealer) and confirm the Denso low-pressure fuel-pump recall (20V-012/20V-682) and, on 2018–2019, the brake vacuum pump recall (21V-890) show completed.
  • On 2018–2019 cars, drive it in stop-and-go traffic: hunting between gears, harsh 1–3 shifts, or a pause then lurch from a stop means the transmission updates likely haven't been done.
  • With the engine warm, turn the heat on full and check for weak heat, coolant smell, or a low reservoir — early signs of the known coolant bypass (flow shut-off) valve failure on 2.5L cars.
  • Look under the car and along the front of the engine for pink/red coolant residue near the coolant valve area (driver's side of the 2.5L block).
  • Test the touchscreen for several minutes: freezing, random reboots, or a black screen on 2018–2019 Entune units is common and has a software fix — but budget for a head unit if it persists.
  • Check the oil level on the dipstick and ask for oil-change receipts; A25A engines run long factory intervals, and 10k-mile oil changes are where consumption complaints come from.
  • On hybrids, verify 12V battery age and watch the dash for hybrid-system warnings on the test drive; the high-voltage pack itself rarely fails on this generation.
Known faults

Common Toyota Camry problems & repair costs

Denso low-pressure fuel pump failure (engine stall)

$400–$900
fuel safety 2018–2020 ~any

Symptoms: Rough running, hesitation from a stop, engine that won't restart when hot, or a sudden stall — including at highway speed. The pump impeller was made from a resin that absorbs fuel, swells, and drags until the pump quits.

Fix: Replace the in-tank fuel pump assembly with the updated part. This is covered FREE under NHTSA recall 20V-012 and its expansion 20V-682 (part of a 1.5M+ vehicle US recall) — check the VIN before paying a dime. Out of pocket at an independent shop it's a $400–$900 job.

Sources: Toyota USA Newsroom — fuel pump recall announcement, RepairPal — NHTSA recall 20V-682 detail, ClassAction.org — Denso fuel pump recall coverage (2018–2019 vehicles)

Brake vacuum pump failure (loss of power brake assist)

$500–$1,200
brakes safety 2018–2019 ~any

Symptoms: Brake pedal suddenly feels rock-hard and the car takes much more pedal force to stop. Caused by a vane cap inside the engine-driven vacuum pump degrading — worse on cars with lots of idling and stop-and-go braking.

Fix: Dealer inspects and repairs or replaces the vacuum pump assembly FREE under NHTSA recall 21V-890 (about 227,000 US Camrys); a smaller 2018-only vacuum pump recall (18V-211) came earlier. Verify by VIN. Paying cash at an independent shop, a vacuum pump runs roughly $500–$1,200.

8-speed (UA80) hesitation, harsh or delayed shifting

$150–$3,500
transmission moderate 2018–2019 (occasionally later) ~from new

Symptoms: Pause-then-lurch when accelerating from a stop, hunting between gears at low speed, clunky 1–3 shifts, delayed engagement into drive or reverse. Rough shifting is the single most-complained-about issue on the 2018 Camry.

Fix: Most cars are fixed with the dealer software recalibration Toyota issued in multiple TSBs (T-SB-0160-18, T-SB-0043-19 and successors) — a $150–$300 visit outside warranty. A small minority with mechanical damage (Toyota's UA80 assembly issue drew a class action) need a torque converter or transmission work at $1,800–$3,500. Test-drive behavior tells you which bucket a car is in.

Coolant bypass valve (flow shut-off valve) leak — 2.5L

$350–$800
cooling moderate 2018–2021 (2.5L A25A) ~60k–120k mi

Symptoms: Slow coolant loss, pink residue on the driver's side of the engine, weak cabin heat, a P2681/P26AC-family code, or an 'Engine Maintenance Required' style warning. The valve's plastic housing and electric actuator fail from heat cycling.

Fix: Replace the electronically controlled coolant bypass valve and top off coolant. Toyota quietly acknowledged this with Customer Support Program 24TE04, extending coverage on many 2018–2021 cars (10 years/100k miles secondary coverage) — check the VIN with a dealer before paying. Independent-shop price is roughly $350–$800.

Sources: ToyotaNation — Toyota CSP 24TE04 flow shut-off valve coolant leak, Go-Parts — P2681 coolant bypass valve on 2018–2024 Camry, RAV4World — coolant bypass valve replacement (same A25A engine)

Entune infotainment freezing, rebooting, blank screen

$100–$1,500
electrical minor 2018–2019 (Entune 3.0 units) ~any

Symptoms: Touchscreen freezes mid-drive, reboots on its own, goes black, or loses audio/backup-camera display until the car is cycled off and on.

Fix: Start with the dealer head-unit software update — Toyota's TSB T-SB-0045-22 (superseding T-SB-0003-20) covers intermittent freezing and rebooting and fixes most cars cheaply. Units that keep failing need a replacement head unit, which is where the $800–$1,500 numbers come from. 2020+ cars with Android Auto support complain far less.

Sources: Go-Parts — Toyota audio system reboots/blank screens (incl. Camry, TSB refs), ToyotaNation — infotainment screen freezes thread

Day-to-day, an XV70 Camry is about as cheap to own as a modern car gets: long service intervals, inexpensive parts everywhere, and no timing belt (chains on all engines). Two habits matter. First, don't stretch oil changes — the A25A runs thin 0W-16 oil, and the consumption complaints that exist almost all trace to 10,000-mile intervals; owners who change at 5,000–6,000 miles report clean engines past 200k. Second, on 2.5L cars keep an eye on the coolant level because of the bypass-valve issue. The hybrid adds no scary costs: the battery pack has a strong record on this generation and Toyota warranted 2020+ hybrid batteries for 10 years/150k miles. Budget normal wear — tires, brakes (hybrids barely eat pads), and a 12V battery every 4–6 years.

    DIY repairs

How to fix common Toyota Camry problems (DIY)

    Oil and filter change (2.5L A25A, 0W-16)

    easy 45 min–1 hr saves ~$60–$120

Tools: Floor jack + jack stands or ramps, Oil filter cap wrench (64mm, 14-flute), 14mm socket for drain plug, Drain pan + funnel, Torque wrench

    1. Warm the engine briefly, then raise and support the front of the car.
    2. Pull the drain plug (14mm) and drain into a pan; install a fresh drain-plug gasket and snug the plug.
    3. Remove the cartridge oil filter housing with the cap wrench, swap the filter element and O-ring, lube the O-ring, and reinstall.
    4. Fill with 0W-16 full synthetic (about 4.8 quarts with filter on the 2.5L), start the engine, check for leaks.
    5. Re-check the level on the dipstick after a few minutes and reset the maintenance reminder.

Cabin & engine air filter change

    easy 20 min saves ~$60–$120

Tools: None (hands only; maybe a small screwdriver)

    1. Open the glovebox, squeeze the sides to drop it past its stops, and pull the cabin filter cover.
    2. Slide in the new cabin filter with the airflow arrow pointing the direction marked on the housing.
    3. Under the hood, unclip the airbox lid, swap the engine panel filter, and re-clip the lid.

    Front brake pad replacement

    moderate 1.5–2 hrs saves ~$150–$300

Tools: Floor jack + jack stands, Lug wrench or 21mm socket, 14mm/17mm sockets for caliper bolts, C-clamp or caliper piston tool, Brake grease

    1. Loosen the lugs, raise and support the car, and remove the front wheel.
    2. Remove the two caliper slide bolts and hang the caliper from the strut with wire — don't let it dangle by the hose.
    3. Slide out the old pads and shims; compress the caliper piston slowly with a clamp (crack the reservoir cap first).
    4. Grease the slide pins and pad contact points, fit the new pads and hardware, and remount the caliper.
    5. Torque the caliper bolts and lugs to spec, then pump the brake pedal firm BEFORE driving.

    The short version

The 2018–2024 Camry (the XV70 generation) is the car people mean when they say “just buy a Camry.” The engines — 2.5L four, 3.5L V6, and the 2.5L hybrid — are all long-haul durable, and there’s no single generation-killing defect like a cracked block or a doomed CVT.

What it has instead is paperwork risk concentrated in the early years. 2018–2020 cars are covered by the huge Denso fuel-pump recall (the pump can quit and stall the car), and 2018–2019 cars have a second safety recall for a brake vacuum pump that can kill power brake assist. Both are fixed free at any Toyota dealer, forever — so the only bad version of these cars is one where nobody ever ran the VIN.

What that means when you’re shopping

Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you look at the car in person. Open recalls aren’t dealbreakers — they’re a free dealer visit — but you want to know.

Then drive it like a commuter: stop-and-go, light throttle, low speed. The early 8-speed automatic is the generation’s most-complained-about component — hesitation from a stop, hunting, clunky low-gear shifts — and Toyota’s software updates fix most of it. A car that shifts smoothly today has either been updated or never needed it. A car that lurches gets a price adjustment or a pass.

On 2.5L cars, peek at the coolant reservoir and the driver’s side of the engine. The electric coolant bypass valve is this engine’s one known wear item, it leaks slowly rather than catastrophically, and Toyota’s customer support program 24TE04 covers many cars — another free-fix-if-you-know check.

    Which one to buy

Hybrid if you want the lowest running costs and the fewest known issues — it skips the 8-speed entirely. 2021–2024 anything if you want zero recall homework. V6 if you want the last of Toyota’s great naturally aspirated sixes in a family sedan; it left after 2024 and won’t be back.

How this file is built: failure modes, recall numbers, and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA recall documents, Toyota’s TSBs and customer support programs, CarComplaints data, and owner-forum reporting, then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Cost figures are independent-shop estimates and vary by region. Spot something off? Tell us.

    Frequently asked questions

Which Toyota Camry years should I avoid?

None are truly 'avoid' cars, but 2018 carries the most baggage: the roughest 8-speed transmission behavior plus both safety recalls (fuel pump and brake vacuum pump). A 2018–2020 car is fine IF the recall work is documented and the transmission shifts cleanly on your test drive. 2021–2024 cars are the cleanest pick.

Was the Camry fuel pump recall fixed for free?

Yes. The Denso low-pressure fuel pump recall (NHTSA 20V-012, expanded under 20V-682) covers 2018–2020 Camrys and the fix — a new pump assembly — is free at any Toyota dealer with no expiration, since safety recalls don't expire. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you buy; an open recall is a half-day errand, not a dealbreaker.

Is the 2018 Camry 8-speed transmission bad?

It's annoying more than fragile. The UA80 8-speed in early cars hesitates and shifts harshly at low speed, and Toyota issued several software updates that fix most of it. A small number of transmissions had a real mechanical defect that drew a class action, but wholesale failures are rare. If the car you're testing shifts smoothly, the updates have likely been done.

How long will a 2018–2024 Camry last?

With basic maintenance, 200,000–300,000 miles is a realistic expectation for the 2.5L and the V6, and the hybrid has the same reputation — Toyota's power-split hybrid system is one of the most proven drivetrains ever made. The engines use timing chains, so there's no belt-replacement cliff.

Is the Camry Hybrid worth buying used?

Yes — it's the pick of the generation. The A25A-FXS hybrid powertrain dodges the 8-speed transmission complaints entirely (it uses Toyota's eCVT), returns around 50 mpg on LE trim, and the battery pack has an excellent record, with 2020+ cars carrying a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty. Just verify the fuel-pump recall on 2018–2020 hybrids like any other Camry.
